Norma Olvera

Ph.D.

Norma Olvera, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Psychological, Health and Learning Sciences at the University of Houston. She earned her doctoral degree in developmental psychology, with a concentration in maternal and child health, from the University of Houston.

Dr. Olvera's research focuses on designing and evaluating health interventions to combat obesity and diabetes by promoting healthy eating habits, regular physical activity and positive body image among Hispanic and African American youth and parents. Her work translates research findings into culturally responsive health programs that reach families from underserved communities.

Dr. Olvera has built a distinguished record of publishing extensively in peer-reviewed, high-impact journals. Her work has garnered a substantial number of citations on Google Scholar, reflecting its broad influence across the fields of public health, obesity prevention and treatment, developmental psychology and diabetes education. She has secured more than $8 million in funding from federal agencies, state programs, and foundations to support her health initiatives. Dr. Olvera has extensive experience teaching obesity classes and mentoring health students and faculty to achieve their academic goals.
